Finished reading A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab

Title: A Gathering of Shadows
Writer: V.E. Schwab
Genre: #fantasy
Length: 512
My rating: 5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Version: Hardcover

It has been four months since a mysterious obsidian stone fell into Kell’s possession. Four months since his path crossed with Delilah Bard. Four months since Prince Rhy was wounded, and since the nefarious Dane twins of White London fell, and four months since the stone was cast with Holland’s dying body through the rift–back into Black London.

Now, restless after having given up his smuggling habit, Kell is visited by dreams of ominous magical events, waking only to think of Lila, who disappeared from the docks as she always meant to do. As Red London finalizes preparations for the Element Games–an extravagant international competition of magic meant to entertain and keep healthy the ties between neighbouring countries–a certain pirate ship draws closer, carrying old friends back into port.

And while Red London is caught up in the pageantry and thrills of the Games, another London is coming back to life. After all, a shadow that was gone in the night will reappear in the morning. But the balance of magic is ever perilous, and for one city to flourish, another London must fall.

It is so rare to have book hangover such enormous as I am having now. I wish I could read this book again. Just to live the emotions over and over.

I gave this book five stars. It was the only option. I know it does not have the possible plot or the best characters ever but it did exactly what I want from my book: It gave me the place where I wanted to escape. The book was fuel to my escapist ’s soul.

There were moments I forgot that I live in the real world and not in the book world. That tells me the book is extraordinary good. I totally forgot myself and only lived through the characters which were built amazingly. So many surprise moments there!

The first book of this series was not so overwhelming as this one. Usually, the second book is a step-down and the adventure is not as intense as in the first book. Now I understand that the first book was only the beginning. It was the place where the world and characters were told. This second book was the fun and games part. I highly recommend to read this series and even if you do not like the first book so much, I suggest you keep reading the second.

Few things about characters:

I fell in love with Alucard Emery. No surprise there as I also love other pirates in books. The more conniving the more I like them.

At the first book, I did not like Rhys very much but in this second book, his personality flourished. I liked him even more than Lila as I have mixed feelings towards her. She is savvy and brave but her heart has not opened up for me yet. What drives her forward? Is it only adventure? I know I need to read the third book. I am sure it will give all the answers And Kell and Holland. I will not go there. Not yet. I need to read the third book.
